Ashtanga vinyasa yoga is a system of yoga that utilizes the breath with bandhas along with postures[asanas] to align and detoxify the body. Ashtanga yoga is suitable for anyone at any age. It is especially suitable for women. Uddiyana bandha and mula bandha strengthen the areas of the body most affected by pregnancy and birth. As one ages they help counteract the effects of gravity. They also help integrate muscle tone in other parts of the body, and one develops inner strenth. Mula bandha is a contraction, a lifting up the pelvic floor which supports the vagina, uterus, bladder rectum and helps regulate the bowels. Uddiyana bandha is an abdominal lift. As a result of the Ashtanga Practice one builds a strong body, and develops a calm mind.
Asthanga Vinyasa yoga is traditionally taught as a self practice
class following the method of Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore,
India. A student practices at his or her own pace, and is given
tuition and adjustments as needed. New postures are added to the sequence as one progresses. Although this self practice is
designed to be more convenient for mothers, with their needs in mind, it is open to anyone, male or female. |
